A Poem from The Dream of Red Chamber (紅樓夢的好了歌)

The Meridian Society will be hosting a talk on Friday 24th October, 2008 at the School of Oriental and African Studies. The lecture will be delivered by our chairman Mr David Liqun Su (苏立群先生) between 6.30pm-7.30pm.

The lecture, entitled “Unknown Parameter Value of a poem from a masterpiece of Chinese literature The Dream of Red Chamber (紅樓夢的好了歌)”. This novel is renowned as one of the Chinese Four Great Classical Novels. It was composed in the mid 18th century during the Qing Dyansty. It is attributed to Cao Xueqin (曹雪芹). It is generally acknowledged as one of the seminal works of classical Chinese fiction. The novel is believed to be semi-autobiographical, mirroring the fortunes of Cao's own family. The novel is remarkable not only for its huge cast of characters (most of them female) and psychological scope, but also for its precise and detailed observation of the life and social structures typical of 18th-century Chinese aristocracy.
