China Tour 2008: members' comments

This year’s China tour “Glimpse of Chinese Ancient Civilization” (古中国文明掠影) has been most successful with full capacity. This is all due to the meticulous planning and experience of our chairman Mr David Su. We have tour members already enquiring about next year’s tour……

Here are some of the comments and experiences from the tour members:-

My favourite location on the tour was the very first, the Forbidden City. It was a bright, sunny day and therefore the yellow glazed tiles on the roofs of the palace were gleaming. I love the sheer scale and majesty of the complex, in particular the way that gates and halls succeed one another.

Thanks for all your help arranging the tour and to everyone else at the Meridian Society who organised the tour, I had a fantastic time and it exceeded all of my expections. I thought the places we visited were amazing. The accommodation was also good (some hotels being really great, some just average but still fine) and the local tour guides were all excellent

My favourite place on the tour was the Hanging Temple on Mount Hengshan, between Datong and Wutaishan. The wooden temple literally hangs from the rocks halfway up a thousand foot cliff on the side of a deep valley. You get to the higher temples along tiny wooden catwalks with low railings. Inside is a maze of narrow corridors and tiny shrines, not only to various Buddhas but also to Taoist immortals. Because the temple is protected by the overhang of the cliff, rain rarely falls on the roofs and catwalks.

Yun Gang Shi Ku and Xuan Kong Si - beautiful scenery and it is wonderful to see the advance in architecture and craving skill even in such early year. It is really an eye opener. Qiao Jia Da Yuan and Ping Yao Gu Cheng - it is wonderful to visit such wonderful architecture and able to understand how the people used to live. If it is not with my group, I could really imagine that I am in the old China. This make me appreciate how advance the Chinese trading and how skilful with the money. Lecture - this is most useful to give us some fundamental understanding of the city and the characteristic of the local people. This make me appreciate even more of the sites we will be visiting. Kai Feng City - Having heard a lot of the judge and his unwavering justice. It is nice to be there!

I had a few favourite places on the tour - The temple on Wu Tai Shan was beautiful and the setting was spectacular. I also liked both the grottoes, the Dragon Gate grottoes were especailly amazing because of their scale. And lastly, I really liked the Islamic street in XiAn. The colours were so vibrant and I loved the mixture of Chinese and Middle Eastern culture - great snacks and cakes!

It has been a very memorable trip.  We were in the great company of folks interested & even dedicated to the Chinese language & culture.  I treasured visiting the sites of China her prime 1,500 years ago.  Quite a few things made a great impression on me, namely, the architecture of the ancient temples, including the Hanging Temple in Hengshan, Pingyao walled city & the Iron Pagodas, the scale of construction of the Terracotta Army, all be it for selfish reason (I have long forgiven Qin Shi Huang since he united China at a time of war & great turmoil, giving China a united written language).  I like the artistry of the two grottos, the scenery of the Red Stone Gorge in the Geology Park of Yuntain Mountain

Thank you for all your comments and photos!!
