2006 Journey to Shangrila Sichuan - Yunnan - Tibet
28th August – 14th September, 2006
In summer 2006, The Meridian Society offered all members a Journey to Shangrila, an exclusive tour arranged by the China Travel Service. Shangrila was romanticized in James Hilton’s novel Lost Horizon as the land of eternal youth. No one knows its exact location, but it is believed to cover the area where the provincial borders of Sichuan, Yunnan and Tibet meet. The highlights of our tour included horse-riding in the fabulous Yading Nature Reserve, following the Sichuan-Tibet Highway at an altitude of 5008m in a convoy of jeeps and visiting the unique and splendid Potala Palace in Lhasa, the home of Chinese Buddhism. This was an opportunity to see a paradise that truly lived up to its mystical name, observe the life of minority groups, savour local cuisines and delicacies and traverse landscapes of exquisite and unspoilt beauty.
